Having finished Asimov’s Guide to the Bible (very highly recommended), I was at a bit of a loss as to how to continue my new habit of “Sunday study.”

I turned to a fascinating lecture course from the Teaching Company called “Lost Christianities: Christian Scriptures and the Battles over Authentication” by Professor Bart D. Ehrman, thanks to which I can identify Calvin as the demiurge of the Marcionites and of Gnosticism:

    I’m on a decade-long journey to read the Anchor Bible Commentary on the books of the Bible. If you are interested in going into more detail about any specific area you might find it useful. In addition to many topical insights I’ve come away with a greater appreciation for the fine art of translating ancient texts. When I hear someone making an argument that relies on how a passage is translated I feel more aware of how subjective the matter really is.
