pirates and democracy

Open Culture has a post called “What Pirates Can Teach Us About Democracy”:

Seamen and captains received almost equal shares of booty (that is, a ratio of 2 – 1 instead of 14 – 1) and captains could be deposed at almost any time.

Yup. Democracy strives for an egalitarian division of stolen goods. Meanwhile, those who temporarily take in more booty can be disposed of by those who have taken in less.
