individualism for the masses

BK Marcus is an amateur political economist with no formal education in the subject.

He works from Charlottesville, Virginia as an editorial consultant for the Ludwig von Mises Institute and managing editor of Mises.org.

He is no longer a house husband, nor a faculty spouse, but he is still a dilettante and a layabout, at least in spirit.

"It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a 'dismal science.' But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance."

Murray Rothbard

Austrian food

March 1st, 2010 by bkmarcus

ManicottiMy clever beloved served us a Rothbardian repast last night: Manicotti and Steak (I kid you not)!

SteakAnd in anticipation of Scott Lahti’s next question, yes I did have Hunan earlier in the weekend, and yes, you could count that as Hunan Action.

(See this old post if you have no idea what I’m talking about. And if you’d care to.)

“Smugopedia is a collection of slightly controversial opinions about a variety of subjects. We offer you the chance to buy a fleeting sense of self-satisfaction at the small cost of alienating your friends and loved ones.”

sur le pot

May 12th, 2009 by bkmarcus

I started this song for Benjamin when he was potty training, but I could never get the last line. His mother finally completed it for me tonight.

To the tune of “Sur le pont d’Avignon”:

Sur le pot, aux Deux Magots
On voit Sartre
On voit Sartre
Sur le pot, aux Deux Magot
On voit Sartre écrire Huis clos

Darth Greenspan

May 11th, 2009 by bkmarcus

With a death in the family a couple weeks ago, I found I couldn’t focus on words long enough to track a sentence from beginning to end, so I spent an afternoon in Photoshop. As a result, today’s Mises Daily probably got more visual attention than any other I’ve worked on:

Darth Greenspan young Alan Skywalker

Postscript

I’ve never in my life been accused of anti-Semitism. I supposed it had to happen eventually:

Dear Mises Institute,

I’m no fan of Greenspan, but I’m just a little disturbed by the Darth Vader mashup on Mr. O’Connor’s article:

http://mises.org/story/3444

For those not understanding the history of the organization, the combination of “Ludwig von Mises Institute” with the organization being from Austria, displaying an image of a modern-day devil that happens to be, and look, quite Jewish, gives pause to anyone with even a faint memory of the 20th Century.

I’m not Jewish, I don’t like Greenspan, and no one would ever accuse me of being politically correct. I love a good Photoshop joke. This image, unfortunately, unless taken in a very, very big cultural vacuum (which would be decidedly unfortunate in this case), is not one of them.

Oddly this seems diametrically opposed to the politics of the Institute. Perhaps you should re-think the graphic art, and stick to the prose. Or, would that be censorship, and decidedly non-libertarian? I submit that self-censorship, exercised with compassion and restraint, is at the heart of a functional libertarian society.

Just my 2 cents. I’m sure you think it’s worth even less than that :)
