Having just canceled DirecTV here at our Lake Superior cabin and replaced it on my laptop with live broadcasts of the nine BBC-TV channels, I am pleased to pass along two web sites with free ad-supported browser extensions enabling you to do likewise: Media Hint, Hola (ExpatShield, my old standby, is worth including as a back-up, though it has recently started to charge for some forms of access, such as BBC iPlayer downloads of television shows.

Those extensions, which tear down many an international Internet wall when it comes to viewing foreign content, work for far more than just live pick-ups of BBC-TV broadcasts.

Here’s another page I found helpful just now,

VPNs Are Old: Better Ways to Access Region-Blocked Video

compensating me in spades, and in the three other suits of cards, for having spent in total almost an hour this morning, heading out of the driveway and then back in again after a short trip, digging with feet and with hands from the trapping snow, and rocking in alternating Drive and Reverse, my twenty-year-old Camry – it turns out there is another easy method, that of reconfiguring your DNS server, to access blocked content for free, though in the case of the Tunlr service, which requires your browser to be Firefox rather than Chrome, though you cannot get the live streams from the BBC TV channels, you can – unlike with the newly pay-to-play portion of such a VPN (Virtual Private Network) as ExpatShield – play downloaded episodes of BBC programs via the iPlayer. And according to the Tunlr channels page, you can also get, among other streaming video services, the live UK feed of ITV.
